Before they shot his mother....

I never, ever thought of Svetlana Khorkina as cute... until now!
I love this beam set. It is awkward yet you can see all her promise.

Also, was Boris Pilkin born an old man?

I wish she'd kept that half back handspring down to lying on her back in her routine longer.  It was fun.  She was just like a leggy little foal who didn't quite have control of her limbs and her big feet yet, but was somehow, strangely, still incredibly graceful.

(Unfortunately guys, the videos of Khorkina in 1992 were removed since I posted about them last night.  Who knows?  They may resurface- if they do, keep your eyes out- they were pretty interesting archival footage of the Grand Diva in her youth!)

She didn't seem to enjoy floor as much back then.  The chorey kind of reminds me of Grishina's current floor.
Anyway, watch for some slightly screwy tumbling that proves why she became a fan of twisting, but does feature and Arabian 3/4 which she tries to stand up out of straight-legged.  Weird.

You know why I think she didn't enjoy it as much? Because she gets up before her music is even finished!!

  1. i just want to thank you for such an informative and well-written gymnastics blog! thanks for putting your time into this.

by the way, i also love this early beam routine from khorkina, especially all the gainer skills. she performs them really well and i wish gymnasts today would bring back gainers on beam.

  2. Aww, the vid was pulled. :(

  3. Boo. The beam video has been removed!

  4. Dang! That's annoying. Hopefully it will return. I will check it out.

  5. I've seen another video of her Arabian 3/4, and how she performs it scares me. I am really suprised she never seriously injured herself on it

  6. That little move is called a cradle and we had one of our girls do it in the late 80s/ early 90s. Took forever to learn but in the end given only a C value by FIG. Too risky for no bonus, probably the reason why she pulled it too.
