DEAR COUCH GYMNAST...

I received this touching question today on my Formspring;

Why don't you write your blog entries on a word processor, or in Firefox using an English dictionary for spelling? You could really do with some proofreading. No offence, but on top of typos, sometimes you don't even get the gymnasts' name right.

Touching.  Let me remind you, this blog is a voluntary activity.  I am not employed by you or anyone.  When I started writing this blog, I didn't think anyone would read it.  I still don't expect that they would want to.  If you don't like the posts I write, often in a big hurry because I have two jobs, a full time research project and a social life, go and find a source of gymnastics information more suitable to your delicate tastes.  There's plenty out there and they can spell.

People like you take the fun out of this.

The Couch Gymnast.

  1. "hear, hear, couch gymnast!" or should I say, "here, here, cowtch gimnist!"

Keep up the good work, this might just be an english teaching with too much time on their hands while school's out for the summer (well at least here in Canada).

  2. Heh. Heh. They spelled "offense" wrong.

  4. Oh no! Don't worry about it. The Couch Gymnast is my absolute favorite gymnastics blog, and part of the reason it is so great is that you update so often (with interesting and thoughtful posts). I'd rather have posts often than have each one be dissertation-quality...

  5. well that's setting it straight! Good answer! I appreciate anything you say no matter how you word it because we all like to know what is going on in gymnastics. Thanks!

  7. Ignore that person. I enjoy reading your information and comments regardless of spelling errors. If I want to read the most grammatically correct articles, I'll go to USA-gymnastics or International Gymnastics, but they aren't as interesting as yours because you add opinions to yours that other people can't. Whether I agree with what you say or not, I still enjoy reading what you have to write.

  8. Shrug it off--I love your blog. :) (and I know I'm not alone!)

  9. don't let them get to you, couchy. i find myself super anal about typos and the like, and your blog is nowhere on my radar in that regard. we're all human, and no matter how many times we proofread an error or two will make it through. as long as you keep writing, i'll keep reading.

  10. I find it ironic that the question had at least one grammatical error (should be gymnast's name) ;)

And to be very picky, offence is only good for British English. It shows up as a typo on Firefox!

  14. Well, you did spell "out" with an 8 in your latest magazine, but that's more amusing than anything. Generally your writing is just fine, and I love your posts.

  15. I enjoy your blog and have always almost bust a rib laughing at your posts about the 'harpies', and 'Anna Pavlova's drinking problem' is a classic but please relax and learn to take advice.

  17. Just wanted to say how much I love this blog! It's such a great source of interesting gymnastics information and always updates so regularly. Normally I like good spelling but honestly, you're completely right when you say this is your blog, your own personal project, and you're not getting paid to do it so there shouldn't be anyone for you to answer to.

Again, I love it, don't change a thing.

  18. Clearly someone with too much time on there hands and nothing better to do than nit pick.

Like you, I'm a busy bod. Working mum (with a social life!) who likes nothing better than grabbing a precious 5 mins everyday to enjoy your brilliant blog. I wish I had the time to comment more or contribute to your mag, but be reassured in the fact that there are plenty of us readers out there who love reading your page and appreciate you finding the time to do it.
    Thanks!

  22. Thanks for your supports guys.
Anyway, this person now thinks I am a 'bogan' and an 'a#$hole' so I don't think I will be hearing from them now!

  23. What the hell is a bogan.lol

I am with you on the spelling mistakes. Don't like it don't read it but I will say this a gymnastics blog should at least try and spell gymnasts names right. I have never seen a mis-spelling on your blog though.

I think there should be like a blogger chat where the best blogs on the internet like you, gymtruthteller and Aunt Joyce all come answer our questions in a chat. That would rock. Gym coaching too.

  27. I appreciate your blog and I'm quite glad you maintain it and update it so often. Thank you!

For anyone wondering, "offence" is an accepted, alternative spelling of "offense". ;)

  28. I truly love your work.
Do not let a petty spoilsport upset you!

  29. Saying hi from Puerto Rico!! i love your blog! it is better than the ones in IG!!

  30. This working mom of two gymnasts absolutely loves your blog. Please don't change a thing! The petty nitpicker who insisted he/she meant no "offence" (sic) was likely is a gym-fanatic troll residing in a basement somewhere, flaming sites while feasting on pork rinds and wishing for glory days of his/her own. Your response was absolutely appropriate. I so enjoy learning more about the history and news about this sport that my girls truly enjoy. Thanks again, and hang in there!
