A READER HAS A QUESTION.....

So, a reader contacted me the other day with a question that I could not answer.  Svetlana Khorkina, during the Athens AA final, wore a lovely black bedazzled number, but then turned up at the medal ceremony in a sleeveless (and might I say unfortunately plastic-looking) blue number?

From this...

To this...

I did read that she did it the moment her floor ex was finished.  She didn't even wait for Patterson to finish.  She came out in blue leo with a Russian flag. She also told journos that regardless "I an still Olympic Champion."  Maybe she was totally expecting to win.  But still.... a costume change?

What gives? What was that about?  Any ideas?

  1. she had done that before. remember the 1995 european cup event finals she had a different leo on for every event.
I personaly think she changed because she new these photos were going to be worldwide and looked at forever and she thought the blue leo looked better???
    who knows?

  2. I believe the blue number (though you can't see it in the photo) had several sponsors' logos on it. Khorkina had made a deal with her sponsors that she would wear that leo on the medal stand and thereby give them a lot of publicity.

  3. Rumours say that she burned that leo because she didn't win lol

This is one great gymnastics mystery

  4. This is on another Olympics, but in 2000 did anyone notice she cut her hair before bars EF? I think she thought her hair jinxed her competition.

  5. The thing is Khorkina's sort of right. Now just six years later, everyone rememers Khorkina and not Carly Patterson. Hell, whenever Nastia is mentioned as AA champion, Carly is never mentioned along with her.

  8. The sponsors' logos is the only explanation that actually makes sense.

  9. Khorkina is the QUEEN with natural star quality. No matter how hard FIG and USAG try to promote you-know-who nowadays, she is absolutely NOTHING compared with Svetlana! :)

  10. Didn't she get a haircut and manicure with her sister to forget the disastrous AA final?

  11. ok this started to bug me so i watched it again.
the black or blue from the compition was better.
I thought the blue had more colors in it but that was the medal ribbon.
the only 2 things i saw on the leo was the rebok logo that was on the other leo and the russian federation patch.
so who knows y she changed

  12. Another interesting thing is that her leotard from the 2004 AA is almost identical to her leotard from the 2000 AA. Same color, same sparkles... the only difference was the little cuts. The one in 2000 had two little cuts, and the 2004 one had only one, but it was bigger and in a different position.

  13. I remember other gymnasts in the past changing leos between events because they were being paid by a sponsor to show a certain number of leos. Maybe she just didn't want to deal with changing in between so she changed then?

  14. Also, in the 1997 World Championships she dyed her hair a different color between the AA and EF. I think Khorkina is like a chameleon: always changing.
